madwire3 Mar 10, 2008 10:41 PM

took like 10 hours to carve and grout.. worth it though... right now its in with th blue tongues and they absolutely love it... my smaller girl took claim to the cave and the bigger one loves climbing all over it.. that cage is gonna be used to raise baby beardies in.. my buddy breeds em and I'm gonna raise a couple up in there til they are big enough to sex accurately..

Very nice. Please post some larger and more close-up pictures if you can.

What type of styro did you use? The white beaded stuff or one of the dense pink or blue polystyrenes?

Dang! That looks great!

Way to go! Nice craftsmanship, and you obviously have a talent, there. I'm jealous. Ha!

Congratulations on a job well done!

I think you just found a way to pay for some ackies. You can put me on the "Build me one" list.

Take care!

I'd love to build and sell these to get my ackies but I have no idea what to charge.. cost of building them isn't terrible but time invested to get a good look is up there. a fella offered me some cash for that one but what he wanted to pay after my cost is taken away come out to like 2 bucks an hour. who is going to work for that? but yeah thanks for the good words. i appriciate it

Quote $10/hr plus 200% material cost and you have a decent offer...

When I did custom sub boxes/woodwork the few times I did, I used a similar formula, but I usually replaced the cost/hr with tool costs. I always say, well if you buy me the blade I'll cut your wood....

Anyways, Ackies work great in heavy trio's. I would seriously consider getting a 1.3 but defenetly forget the 1.1, even if cost is a factor.

well ur just a bag of good info... thanks.. but if I did that formula for the one in he pic it would be like 200 bucks.. I just took it out of the tank and threw some color on it.. waiting for it to dry so I can do some sanding...

yeah finding 1.1 red ackies isn't easy finding 1.2 or 1.3 doesn't sound like a easy find.. I was thinking 1.2 but looking around I haven't found any besides a 0.1.1 set

Is that sarcasism.....? Would you not sell you backdrop for $200, I think my formula works well for most of the stuff I do. However some areas of the country do have a higher standard of living. I remember when custom automotive work was $75/hr....

Actually its not that hard you just have to know where and when to look. Try the monitor forum and get a hold of Frank if your nice you may be able to get on his list. Also Varanus.net has listings all the time, about once a year you'll see 1.3 mixed hatchlings pop up on the list. Or ask in their forums their a lot more friendly but they don't tolerate ignorance, the members over their aren't the "kid in the pet store impulse buy hobbist". Unfortunatly thats the problem in the monitor forum here, can't tell you how many times I've seen "what sizer cage for my Nile"

...that wasn't in reference or labeling you as a person, I have no idea what type of hobbist you. I was just catorgizing the steroype of people here on the monitor forum vs over there.

Another thing is its a lot harder to aclimate adults to each other...

If I was starting in ackies I would buy 0.0.10

nah was helpful info.. no sarcasm.. well maybe a little.

I'd sell one like this for 200 but the issue is more who is willing to pay 200.. I've worked in petstores and sadly as u know few people are willing to spend the money on things that are a must let alone fork out the money for a cosmetic piece. would be nice though..

I ask a lot of questions ask chris but that's regarding building and such.. with animals I read and read and ask keepers... I look at it like if I can't keep it healthy.. happy and its whole life I don't want it. on the ackies I've been reading up for years on a few monitors and those guys pop up a lot so I feel I'm ready to try... thanks for the tips

Well the formula will help turn people away than :D

Unless you did want to do it for income...

..didn't mean to imply you weren't read, just passing on things I've learned in doing my own research. By the way they will eat you out of house and home.........

Good Luck

Get some better pics of that BG and post another thread...

Cheers

after the paint dries ill sand it then snap a couple pics and post em. I'm aware of the food intake... I've kept savannahs for years.. and took after 2 large niles for a friend while he went overseas.. had his garage set up for them.. was fun but yeah expensive.. cost as much to feed them as it does me.. I breed hissers and crickets so I'm not too worried. working on getting some superworm colonies goin again as well.. anyways gotta run to my storage for sandpaper so later
