ESA species and noncommercial trade

Jeannot Mar 10, 2008 08:59 PM

Hello, can anyone comment on the noncommercial interstate trade in species listed on the USA Endangered Species Act? I have a breeding group of Podocnemis unifilis that I'd like to place on breeding loan in another state. My specimens were captive bred in my home state, bred from animals legally imported by the trade in the '60s. No permits were required to obtain or keep my stock. I do not intend to sell or in anyway profit from this. What do you advise as far as permits etc.? I plan to contact USFW tomorrow but I'd like to hear what forum readers have to say.

as long as no financial gain. breeding loans are permitted under interstate transfers as are donations, gifts, etc.

I would check with the USF&W to be sure you do not violate the Lacey Act. I doubt it but to be sure... Of course, they may want proof that you obtained them pre-listing.
