Butterfly loaches: Compatible with stream-dwelling newts?

^iMp^ Aug 28, 2003 12:59 PM

Just wondering...

These algae-eating fish are peaceful, cool-water stream-dwellers. They grow to be about 3" (sometimes smaller) and are fairly defenseless, as far as I know.

The primary reason for wanting these lil' buggers is that they are algae eaters. Aside from this, they would do well in my tank set-up...I just want to make sure that they are newt-safe.

I do not now about butterfly loaches but most algae eaters have spines which could potentially hurt newts. I remember reading in the "species mixing disasters" article at caudate central about a cfb that was killed by spines from an algae eater

Butterfly loaches are not true loaches or plecos--they lack spines, poison, or any other defensive mechanism besides camouflage. This is only true of *some* genuses of butterfly loaches (there are about six genuses, if I remember correctly).

Still, I'd like to hear if anyone has successfully mixed the two animals. They sound alright, but I really don't want to take any chances.
