Santa Clara County "bullsnake."

staustin2006 Mar 11, 2008 04:23 PM

Evidently I've been wrong all these years, at least according to a self-described "expert" I ran into at the coffee shop. He claimed to have once owned a fer-de-lance, a coral snake, a cobra, a mamba, various pythons and boas, and what all. Proceeded to lecture me about how boas only live in the tropics and that the snake in my hands was a common bullsnake, which he sees all the time. Go figger. A little Jeff Corwin goes a long way. I don't generally collect but this guy is so docile I brought him home for a visit. Doesn't even stink like your usual boa.

All were left in situ.

Really like the boa and the second rattler shot! The ringneck is cool too, looks like you are well into it out west!

There are alot of ignorant, self-experts out and about in the world. With a little true research, all of what this guy said could easily be discovered otherwise. I'm a big fan of rubber, rosy and sand boas, none of which I currently own but have had a rosy in the past.

They're very easy to enjoy but you need to be very careful collecting rubber boas such as the on in the picture because if I'm not mistaken they are protected or something to that effect. It might be a good idea to look into it or just becareful of who you advertise it to.

Anyways, good pictures, take care.

Presently, he can possess that locality in Calif, I think 2 specimens with a fishing license, someone correct me please. It is the rubber boa populations in Southern Calif (San Bernardino populations) that one cannot legally possess without special permit.

Damn, I'm gonna need to go get some of those then.

Yeah, Mark, according to the section on collecting laws in my CA herps field guide the SoCal Rubbers are protected, not the ones in NorCal.
