Only one egg?

fifthgrade2001 Mar 11, 2008 05:31 PM

Hi there,
This is my third breeding season. Last year one my females only laid one egg at a time. None ended up hatching. This year another female,Cassie, laid her first clutch with two eggs. The clutch Cassie laid yesterday was only one egg. Any ideas as to what is going on with my girls? I could really use some help with this if anyone has any ideas. Also what uth is the best. Thanks in advance

Could be several things, but most likely the single eggs aren't viable. A virgin female will sometimes lay one egg. I would check for egg binding if you haven't already. (Just hold her up to the light.) I would guess then she is underweight or not getting enough nutrition/calcium especially to continue to produce. This would be the most common of the reasons for stopping early.

Do you have any pictures of the girls in question? Do you have calcium dishes available to them at all times? Do you do anything special before they breed like feed a pinkie?

First thanks for your imput. I am at a loss of ideas here. My geckos always have a supply of calcium in their tanks. Last season Lou only laid one at a time but Cassie laid two per clutch. Everything is the same is last breeding season. Any other ideas let me know. There are pics of my females below. Thanks again.

The bottom one might want for a bit more fat, but both look healthy. I guess it could be something about the gecko, her temps, there are a lot of factors. I would say, if she is only producing one egg and then laying it. (Meaning she's not producing two and either holding one or reabsorbing one.) It could be she might have some problems with one of her ovaries, especially if she always produces from the same side.

Try to monitor her, make sure she is only producing one egg and see if it is always on the same side. You could consider taking her to the vet to check on her reproductive system, but I'm not sure how much they could really do... they might remove the nonproducing ovary and test for cancer or infection. I'm probably reaching a bit there, I would guess there really isn't anything that serious wrong with her.

That is the best I can offer. Could just be her way. Good luck, sorry I'm not more help.
