Pygmy Leaf Chams with Dart Frogs

herper500 May 22, 2003 10:18 PM

I was wondering if I could put a pair of Pygmy Leaf Chameleons (R. brevicaudatus) with a pair of Green and Black Dart (D. Auratus) frogs in a 35 gallon aquarium if set up properly. Any feedback would be great. I'm not a fan of mixing species, but they both are very similar in size and low tempered. So far, from what I read there care requirements are very similar as well.

Thanks,
Erik

im no expert, but i wouldnt recommend it...the chams, small as they are, if hungry enough might go after a dart frog, or mistake it as a cricket or something...and if it did get it, the dart frog and the cham could die, because the dart frogs do contain a good amt of toxin in captivity (wild ones contain a lot more because they eat like poisoness spiders, according to these books i read, and take in the toxins from them mixing it woth their own toxins) but yea,,,just my 2 cents....someone correct me if im wrong

If you are thinking of veileds, panthers, and other larger species you would be correct. The chameleons he is talking about (Rhampholeon) are about the same size as the frogs so there shouldn't be a problem with the chameleons going after the frogs...

It would be ok ....people say not to mix different types of animals but people do it anyways.

I have heard that dart frogs in captiveity that were born in captivity are completely harmless and the stump tails chameleons shouldn't harm the frogs.

make sure the frogs and chams are all treated for parasites first. and also make sure that the pool for the frogs is shallow enough for the chameleons to walk through. I would firt let the chameleon get aclamated to the cage then try a frog i there for a few moments and see if the chameleons are stressed/afraid of it if they do seem bothered by it it should be ok to add the other one just keep an eye on them and make should that everyone of them eats..

I have long considered doing this. As long as the conditions were right for both there are no problems that I can think of.

Thanks. I read that artical a while back - it was really helpful. I am also considering mantella's - both these species are from madagascar and would meet each other often in the wild.

Well, it seems to be a personal choice. After reading that same article I wrote Ken Kalisch (editor of Chameleon News) to ask his opinion and/or where I might get more info, as Chad only mentions it in his article. Here is part of his reply to me, and I quote:

"Here is my take on the mixing of different reptiles.. The idea sounds very cool... but the reality is you potentially are exposing them to more environmental problems with the introduction of other reptiles. I would say play it safe and house like types in their own housing set ups." (KK)

I am not sure if it is something I will do, with my stumpi's, but would certainly be interested in reading/hearing anything you may find re: info, experience, etc. I think I would take personal experience over anything else, so please keep me posted!
