I was wondering how roaches would do as a staple? I plan on feeding silkworms and roaches as the main insects, but was wondering what is a good age to try roaches?

I start feeding baby roaches to my baby beardies at about 1 week old. they like them better than crix. they are smaller and dont move as fast or at least they dont hop. If you use death heads the advantage is they dont climb the walls so its easier for the BDs to catch. lobsters are more prolific and dont get large so they are great for babies and juvies. they do climb so you have to be carefull.

I'd like to feed a non-flying/non-climbing species of roach, so probably death head or the like. Are they softer shelled than other species of roach?
Death heads are best fed before they become an adult, that’s when they are the meatiest. They don’t climb or fly but they do have wings to flutter and break their fall. They have 20 or so babies 2-3 times a year. They reach maturity at about 9 months-1 year. That’s when they get their wings. I keep a colony of 150 or so in a 30 gal tub. We feed them scraps from the leftover fruit and veggies from everyone else as well as ground dog chow. I use bran bedding because the little ones like to stay buried so it makes them kind of hard to find; you will have to sift. All my guys love roaches more than anything else.
Good luck
