KETV (Omaha, Nebraska) 10 March 08 Snake Lamp Causes Fire, Crews Say
Omaha: A lamp in a snake cage caused a duplex fire Sunday night, Omaha police said.
At about 9:30 p.m., crews went to 23rd and Spring streets. The resident returned home to find a fire in the front room. Authorities said the occupant had removed the lamp from the top of a snake's cage earlier in the day and forgotten to return it. The warming lamp's timer turned it on, and that heated up some combustibles sitting nearby, crews said.
The snake died in the fire and a cat was reported missing. No one else was injured.
The fire caused about $50,000 in damage.
