Tail nips

dragonlady1954 Aug 28, 2003 02:47 PM

Well, I give up. I feel like I did every thing as right as I could but everything is going terribly wrong. My post below about tail biting babies ended up about raising hatchlings without crickets. I didn’t want to feed crickets due to the mess and I thought that if the babies never had to chase down their food they wouldn’t bite each other’s tails. Well the tails got bit anyway. So now I am so confused. I did give them some canned crickets and some of them liked it. Even though the can said ‘mini’ crickets I still had some that were too big and I had to tear them in half. I am afraid that the one’s with the tail nips will be hard to find homes for even if I give them away. I have an adult female that I have had for about a year and she lost a lot of her tail as a baby (within a week after I bought her) but most people don’t want animals unless they are perfect!!! I am just heart sick . I am sorry to ramble but I didn’t sleep much last night and have shed a few tears over this. Sharon

nips will happen, even nipped dragons will find homes.. i have 2 with bits missing, Daigh is missing about an inch, and even carrick bug head is missing a tiny bit, sure its not a whole lot on his tail but even so. Dont get discouraged, you did what you thought was best for the babies, insticnt tells them to chase and grab what moves, feeding pellets wont change that. From here on in, just keep their bellies full and try and seperate them into small groups the best you can, remove bullies to their own enclosures and go from there.

You may not be able to get full price for a stub tailed dragon, but not everyone cares if they got a little less tail if they can get them half off or something. They are still the same funny little loving creatures with or without their full tails. My new dragon "Gollum" is missing part of his tail and he is still great. Don't worry about it, they'll be fine and there are plenty of people out there who would give them a loving home.

I get emotional even thinking about these little guys. It's just that I got attached to them so quickly. I hope that they find homes with people like you guys that appreciate their funny little personalities and love them even if they aren't perfect. Thanks, you have given me some hope for these fellows.

I have two with shorter tails, one, I bought that way. The other was a bad shed. I have a tendancy to adopt needy things.
I don't think you'll have a problem selling them. There are alot of people that realize tails don't make a beardie.

I also have a tail nipped dragon. Purchased him for $125. It's not really that noticeable, but there's a bend at the tip. Not a "perfect" dragon, but just as loveable!

I have a tail-nip story that may brighten your day a little. A first time breeder in my area did not seperate out her babies when they began to show alot of size difference and had some HORRIBLE nips. We are talking tails AND a couple with LEGS missing. She felt much the same way you do. I manage a pet store, and took the babies in and raised them anyway. They were perfectly healthy... of course the ones missing feet were a little slow. Anywho, I donated those dragons to an elementary school classroom where the teacher used them to teach children about overcoming disabilities. They brought alot of smiles to alot of children and were completely adored. The teacher still has them in her classroom to date!! Hope that might have helped!!

Some folks don't much worry about color or number of toes, etc....

Grumpy here is missing the tips of two...fingers? on her left "hand", and the tip of one on her right.
We just figure she'll never be a good pick-pocket. *shrug*
