Ball Pythons breed for a long time, 24 hours sometimes more. They are probably just trying. When they actually copulate and are done the male will show no interest for a day or two.
Sorry to disagree, but apparently my snakes haven't read the book. I am certain there is actual mating taking place. Often I can see the base of the male's hemepene while they are linked. I would post pictures if I had a camera.
They might be breeding when you look 2X-3X a day, but it is most certainly not separate breedings that you are witnessing. If you read Barker's book it will explain the process and why it takes so long.
