Feeding videos

Dave79 Mar 14, 2008 05:13 PM

Have you seen some of the feeding videos on Youtube? These videos don't help the reptile community. Some of the people posting these videos are morons that make reptile people look like sickos who like to see animals suffer. You have these idiots laughing as a baby rat is screaming while being eaten alive by an anaconda, or a group of drunk fools going nuts over a burmese python eating a parakeet that is also squaking and screaming. I think it's just bad publicity. Just a thought.

For a lot of people, feeding the snake is the 'cool' part of owning it, and yes, there are a lot of very stupid people out there who also own snakes.

Of course it's bad publicity, but how is it our right to tell people not to post videos of what they enjoy? We might think they are cruel and stupid but they think they're the coolest thing since sliced bread. And, as much as it might irritate the rest of us, it's their right to think that.

Yes, it's bad publicity, no, it doesn't help our cause much, but what can we really do about it?

If it bugs you that much, don't view them. People only post things to get views - the more views, the higher the rating, the higher the rating, the more views. Vicious cycle. So view (and repeatedly view) good videos, instead of spending your time searching out the video of the idiot feeding his snake a parakeet.

finally something I agree with you about.

We sold a boa the other day at the pet shop, and when the guy came in to get food for it. His friend was offering to pay to feed the snake if he agreed to feed it a hamster. I would have refused the sell, but the guy that owned the snake told his friend to shut up and quit being a dork. GOOD FOR HIM!!!

I told him that the novelty of feeding would wear off shortly.

The one thing I do find interesting is the result that the bite of a venemous snake has on a rodent. We offered a cobra a meal the other day and he killed it, but didn't eat it. When we removed the mouse, it felt like styrofoam. Because the venom is a digestive enzyme, the mouse was literally breaking down as if it had been eaten even though it had not. Very interesting, but no reason to film it and show the world.
