Dear Dr. Schnirel,

Thank you for contacting my office regarding funding for endangered species programs, such as the Asian and African Elephant Funds, the Great Ape Fund, the Marine Turtle Fund, the Rhino-Tiger Fund and the Neotropical Migratory Bird Fund. I appreciate hearing form you on this important issue and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you may know, these species continue to face challenges in countries that suffer from poverty, civil strife, and natural disasters. Funds are needed to control illegal poaching and smuggling of wildlife products and to protect their habitats. Continuing support from the United States in collaboration with other public and private sponsors will be essential to address these challenges.

These programs have proved widely affective. They have leveraged more than three times the U.S. federal investment through matching contributions from private and public partners. Please know that I support increased federal funding for these programs. Protecting wildlife around the globe is essential to maintaining our ecosystem and protecting our planet. Be assured that I will keep your thoughts firmly in mind as I continue to monitor this situation.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. I sincerely appreciate your input and hope you will contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance. I hope you'll find my website (www.klein.house.gov) a useful resource in keeping up with events in Washington and the 22nd District of Florida.

Sincerely,

Ron Klein
Member of Congress
