I have two. One from Pro Products (penlight size) that works well if you can get very close to what you are measuring. I also have the PE-2 from Pro Exotics which is good for farther away and has the laser sighting. I am happy with both. You could also check out Reptile Basics (www.reptilebasics.com) as they have some that look nice but I have not used those. Hope this helps.

I have a PE-2 from Pro Exotics, Love it!

I also have a PE-1, not the greatest but still works.

You can also get larger gun types from Boaphile and automotive suppliers. These are a bit larger than one would keep in a pocket but they work. IMO a little overkill as you really don't need that high of a range.

The thing I like about the PE-2 is the 6:1 ratio meaning I can be 6 feet away and still measure just a 1' area. The PE-1 has a 1:1 ratio so I always had to reach in for accurate temps. Not always a favorable task. The PE-2 also has the sighting laser helps a lot.

Good Luck

Three months ago I dropped and destroyed the IR temp gun I'd been using for several years, so went shopping for a new one. I settled on a Raytek MT6. The meaningless list price is $99, but it seems to be available for $50 to $60. Here's a link to the Amazon product page:

You didn't say how much you were looking to spend, but I like the features on this one and feel it's worth the price. But even the cheaper ones like those from Pro Exotics are good, I think. These are one of those husbandry tools that makes taking care of herps so much easier.
