A question about Beans...

Ravingphule Mar 15, 2008 05:31 PM

Hi I'm new to the forum, but not to Uros.

I just got a new Uro today. My friend Faust passed away recently. I have noticed a couple of Care Sheets that recommend grinding up 16 bean soup mix (just the dried beans of course) and adding it to the seed mix, that seemed new to me I'm curious to see what folks here think...

My new as of yet unnamed friend is currently in a 40 breeder has all the right heat. Newspaper substrate and plenty of hides.

Thanks!!

I've never tried ground dried beans, but my little guy does get lima beans. What I would suggest is buying a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, which has peas, carrots, corn, green beans and lima beans. Veges should be about 5-10% of their diet. My guy only eats food that is torn up, so if you find your guy likes his food chopped up, you can defrost the veges, chop them up, and re-freeze little pellets in an ice-cube tray. I put a frozen pellet on top of his food before I leave for work, and by the time he wakes up it is defrosted and ready to eat.

The main key with these guys is to vary their food. It is hard to give them exactly what they need, so a varied diet important. One last ting, they love dandilion flowers and they are very nutritious, so keep an eye out for dandilions that you know haven't been treated with chemicals.

We've used the soup bean mix for years, tossing out the kidney beans as the care sheets suggest. We add to them buckwheat groats, oat groats, bulghar wheat, barley, finch feed, bearded dragon food, mung beans, lentils, etc.
Green foods include dandelion, nasturtium, mallow & hibiscus flowers & leaves. Also endive, romaine, escarole, turnips, bok choy, bean sprouts & mustards. Would feed alfalfa if we knew how to grow it.
Hope this helps. Must be a whole bunch more good eats out there for them that we just don't know about yet. No doubt camel poop is one of them but we can't find it at our health food store. And, yes, camel poop is a known indigenous food item.
Regards,
D&L.

Thanks for the responses...I didn't feed my last Uro. Beans and he seemed to do ok...I do feed leafy greens (a mix of turnip, collards and arugula). I will change the collards for dandelion greens when they become available and i do feed a mix of thawed frozen veggies. I have a brown thumb and don't know where to get flowers for him to eat that are safe and clean...I have been threatening to buy dandelion seeds and put them in a pot on my porch.

I'm no farmer either but the plants listed are no-brainers to grow in pots or in the ground. Matter of fact, nasturtiums grow best in poor soil. Don't know where you live but dandelions are EVERYWHERE. You shouldn't have to order seeds. As for hybiscus, just visit any supplier of plants & shrubs & you'll find them. These flowers & leaves are important contributors to their overall diet. A reliance on mustards, turnips, collards, etc. along with frozen mixed vegetables (nutrient value low) will just eventually give you a lizard in decline.
Just my pennies.

Couldn't bring up the webpage. They sell camel krap?

I ordered Mazuri pellets from deer fern farms as well as the Uro dust and miner-all to supplement his diet with and I will go and try to buy Nasturtium seeds and plant them on my porch, I however do not trust any of the dandelions that grow near me due to pesticides I live in a condo complex and I know they spray..

You want dandelion seeds? Send us a SASE & you got 'em! It'll be another month or so before they start flowering but we'll be happy to fix you up. No problem to grow. Dirt water & you're done. Your Uros will love you.

If you find them, they should look more like little "poofs" than real seeds. The ones from up north put out much larger flowers than our Florida brand. We're working on those. Also, there's lots of what are called "false dandelions." Our guys will practically break glass to get to them. Much smaller flowers but they have many more flowers per shoot.

OMG can you send me some of those. i have dandelions everywhere but the problem is mine are all sprayed. i went to the local nursery and asked for dandelion seeds and the guy looked at me like i had lost my mind!! he kept telling me "you mean to kill them?" i was like "NO to GROW them." he said "but people don't grow those they kill them." if you are willing to send me some please give me your address and i will put a sase in the mail tommorrow!!! if you would prefer to email it to me instead of posting it my email is oki_neko@hotmail.com.
