just a Q...

annaisagecko Mar 15, 2008 11:44 PM

hi,
this is Anna,

i was wondering if rock hides and stuff of that nature can be baked like a stick can?

or if it should just be washed like the other stuff in the cage? i have a big flat rock and a rock water dish and hide,

thanks in advance!

I don't think I'd chance baking rocks on the off chance it might explode. Bleach water and a scrub brush should do the trick. Just don't put the rocks back in until all the bleach odor is gone from the rocks.

actually I'd skip the bleach... (if its not too late!) Some rocks are actually quite porous and can hold and release the bleach back out, even if they don't smell to our very inferior human scent glands. I would recommend a boiling, 20 minutes or more at a nice rolling boil. That's what I do, and it works for water dishes as well. Have you had good results with stick baking? I've never tried it myself, but may have a need to do so now. I have a gas oven, and something just seems very wrong to me to put combustible materials in there.

oops its to late, but does the fact that its been siting out help any? or would boiling anyway help?

i haven't gotten to the stick baking yet, lol but yeah it seems kinda like trying to start a fire in your oven! but a lot of people do it so i'm guessing it can be done without burning down the house ......i hope....haha,

thanks for the help, Anna.

well the dilute solution is good- you should never use pure bleach on anything your animal might lick. I think boiling might help to leach out any remaining bleach solution that may have seeped into the rock- do you know what kind of rock it is? If you don't want to boil it, a series of soaks and rinses in pure water should get rid of any residual chemicals.

i don't really know what kind they are but three are obviously molded/fake rock i don't know what brand or anything they don't say on them, but the other one is a real rock,

how long do you boil yours and on what heat? and if thats not gonna work how would you soak them?

thank you, Anna

I have a big cauldron-type pot, I think it's called a dutch oven- holds like 2 gallons. I fill it up maybe halfway with water, put it on a burner at high heat, and bring to a rolling boil. then I drop in (carefully) whatever I'm sanitizing, rocks, water bowls, etc, and make sure there is enough water to cover them. Keep it going, at a steady boil for at least 20 minutes, adding water hot water a little at a time as needed to keep the stuff underwater. Then you turn the heat off, let it cool, drain, and you're done. For soaking, use a clean bucket or whatever you've got that's big enough, fill with water, drop your rocks in, and soak I'd say overnight. Drain the water, rinse the rocks, and repeat several times. If your fake rocks are plastic, you may want to opt for soaking, esp. since they've already been bleached. You do not want to melt the plastic to the bottom of your pot while boiling!
