He sure looks happy. Can't really tell from the photo angle but he doesn't look skinny or dehydrated.

are you sure it's not EIGHTYsix grams?

Kribby83 Mar 17, 2008 02:14 PM

Yes I'm sure. I have a digital scale in oz and grams. He's almost 7 inches and he's only 38 grams and I know the scale is accurate. It seems like from what others have said about the weight-length that he'd be underweight but he's plump...wierd i KNOw... maybe his tail is extra long I don't know. He's met my vet and everything.. I wonder why he isn't heavier.. oh well he' s healthy so i'ts not really important i suppose

In this species, you can't go by the belly because they puff up when scared. Check the tail base (just below the back) It shouldn't have indentations but be fairly smooth or rounded.

Sometimes they slow down in the winter because of lower temps and you should be monitoring temp changes, raising temps with lighting changes when needed.

They also get bored with their diets and you can help by offering their favorite color orange (shaved carrot, squash, pumpkin)mixed in with greens.
Occasional pieces of fruit like cantelope, apples, pears in small amounts can give them hydration and help appetite.

And don't over dust their food with supplements. That can be a turn off.

Hope that helps!

yeah, no he's of healthy weight. I've rescued emaciated ones before I know what to look for. His tail is fine, I know they "poof" out!

He eats all his veggies. I don't think they like fruit... at least this one doesn't. I had a mali that used to eat more varied- pinkies etc. but this lil' uro only eats veggies, no bugs and no fruit... which is what he's suppossed to. Yeah I dust the veggies with powdered tortoise food and sometimes ca. too much and they won't eat it.

thanks,
Kristen

Hi, Not a big deal if he doesn't like fruit as they really aren't nutritous. It's just a way of getting hydration into a slow eater. Sometimes it can aid in weight gain but if he's eating fresh greens and veggies daily than he probably doesn't have an issue with dehydration.

If your in an area that gets dandelion flowers in the spring that should help put weight on as they love those. Just be sure you don't pick them in an area close to a road that gets salted or that may have chemicals.

Sometimes they just start out slow and have growth spurts with the seasons.

Hope that helps!

Oops, sorry did not post message before hitting enter.
7" and approx 80 grams. This was for a 4 month old egyptian uro. That was last years clutch...
My 5 month old hatchlings are 3 times as heavy for the same approx. length.
How old is the uro. Are you sure that your scale is calibrated correctly?
The photo of the uro looks okay, but the numbers do not seem right. 36 grams is very, very, light
If the appetite is good then I would assume the weight will increase.

Can you get another photo?
