Texas indigo eggs

steve fuller Mar 17, 2008 03:24 AM

Eleven eggs from Sue Ellen
Two are infertile, one is doubtful, and eight look good.
She shed on 2/25. Eggs arrived 3/16 and 3/17.
Last year she produced 9/10 good eggs.

Congrats Steve! Did she have them more or less at the same time last year? The indigos at my study site are nowhere to be seen, I wonder if the same is going on?

A bit of road construction in the immediate area may have the girls in hiding, but i am thinking they are in preparedness for egg laying at this time. Since I have only seen one neonate a few years back, it is difficult to say what is going on with the hatchlings, maybe in 100 days or so we will know better. At least the road construction is minor and not in the exact area of the site.
I hope to be able to determine visually by photographs wheteher the females did indeed lay eggs and watch and record the feeding habits after the fact. I also hope to see some neonates and juveniles feeding in the area and determine the relationship between the two females and their offspring.

Yes, she did. Mid-March. I'm guessing there's connection to time she started mating early last November. Is it warm enough in your area for them to be out?

Yes and no, there are fluctuations in temps, but usually they sun when there is sun, cold or not. Your breeding times correlate almost exactly with what I experience here in the wild. By George, I think you've got it! Good luck on those kids, I may even be tempted to get into easterns someday soon, they have always fascinated me.

Good luck with them Steve! Hopefully in a few weeks I'll have some of my own. And hopefully I won't screw up their incubation this year...
