A very good question!
Okay, here is how we prevent "water damage" to everything (walls; carpets; etc.)

The cage has a tub for drainage (there are shallow tubs you can buy at WalMart - or more expensive tubs you can get thet will fit inside or underneath the cage from Scales. These are 22" x 22" x 6" deep, and cost about $26 from American Agriculture

Once you have the drainage under control, you can focus on the misting (walls, etc). We use inexpensive cotton sheets (twin size and cut to size we need). If you pick them up at WalMart, this will cost you about $3. Fasten the sheet around the back of the cage (if you have only one, you will want to cover half the sides and the back completely). The cotton breathes... allows air flow and helps with the humidity - all while saving the walls and carpet.

Hope this helps,

one thing is that scales uses self tapping screws in their cages, meaning that as you are putting in the screw, you are drilling the hole. the same size cage, with pre drilled holes, from reptile depot, runs about 114-116 shipped. i have never had to worry about water damage, i use a misting system that only sprays the inside of the cage, and water has never leaked from the bottom, the plants weigh enough to sink the middle down enough to pool the water there. the cages are on 3' stands, so no water ever touches the ground.
