The Pheromone signal from the females is triggered by the brumation cycle.

If you were to go out and catch a group of adult garters, and throw them all together in a container, a breeding ball would be the last thing you would get from this.
Firstly, chances are the females would already be gravid, and the males will most likely just fight, they all would be way too stressed to get it on, and if one of them had a disease you could very likely spread it to the whole colony.
This is just my opinion, anyone else care to add or correct me?
