ball python genetics/breeding

bergmantis Mar 18, 2008 11:28 PM

My main focus is colombian boas and I now want to expand into balls. I know very little about breeding them other than how efficient they are. Can someone direct me to a good source of info for all their color morphs as well as how to breed them? I am also unfamiliar with incubators (models, brands) and temps/humidity.

Thanks,

Mat

Google NERD - they have a pretty nice list of most of the morphs around today.

Incubation wise, as long as you can keep the humidity as close to 100% as possible, with temps between 87 and 90 (as constant as possible), for 52-60 days...anything that will do that works as an incubator.

Breeding is relatively simple. You feed them for a while, then drop ambient temps a bit, then put 'em together and wait.
You can try a million tricks and mess with the husbandry in whatever ways imaginable...but in the end they'll do it when they feel like it.
After that, it's just keeping things optimal and waiting for the female to decide its time to ovulate, then drop eggs.

You dont even have to drop the temps if you dont want. Also VPI has the most complete book on this subject to date. Good luck!

When I was just getting into balls, I found several breeders' websites very helpful. Two of my favorites are:

www.ballpython.ca/gallery/breeding.html

www.8ballpythons.com/journal.htm

Good luck!
