Frank,
Your male BRB is in fact the Ron Jeremy of snake breeding. Good luck. How's the temperment of your Lucy Texas Rats? I understand they can be a little "testy" at times. I have thought about picking a pair up in the past, however I'll be in divorce court if my 2 year old daughter (who enjoy's holding the BRB's) gets bit.

Thanks for your thoughts,
John

FRoberts Mar 19, 2008 09:42 PM

My line of Lucy are very tractable animals as adults. The neonates are a bit testy out of the egg but calm down rather quickly and to be honest can't hurt you at all when they bite. Aggression in snakes is a protection mechanism and once the ophidian looses its initial fear of you as a perceived predator they are no longer aggressive. Just a heavy presence is all that is necessary in my experience. I have tamed some mean snakes without any handling with this approach. But most people don't live in their snake rooms to be honest. I recently sold some "non aggressive neonates" to someone. I will email him and ask him to comment on their demeanor.

Here is some photos of this snakes neonates bred by my best friend John Rodriquez...

They are indeed some friendly snakes. And yes, Frank actually lives in his snake room I believe He told me his theory of spending a large amount of time around his snakes and keeping them primarily in glass front enclosures...I'd have to say I think he's got something.

Frank,
Thanks for the input and the pic's. I was originally going to get a pair of LTR or LBlackRats but based on what I heard about their demeanor I opted for the Okeetees; which I have been very happy with. Don Solderberg has some nice specimens. I've seen photo's of neonates with "bug" eyes. Maybe I'll shop again during the summer. Sorry for yapping about colubrids on this forum- I saw Franks pic's and had to post. Thanks!

Frank,

About how big do they get as adults and what are the recommended cage temp's? I collected snakes (primarily BCI and Burmese Pythons) about 15 years ago and am just getting back into collecting with future hopes of breeding. Collecting snakes was much easier when I wasn't married. LOL...If my daughter get's into it things will be easier down the road- but she's only 2 years old at the moment.

John,

The female is like almost 4 feet. The male close to 5 and quite massive, eats and craps like a machine. There are quite a variety of nice Corn Snakes if that keeps the Mrs. off your tail.

If you spend a lot of quality time with your child, the herptile thing is contagious. They love treefrogs BTW =)

I also live in New Jersey.

Eh Frank,

How do the LTR's compare to the LBlack Rats sizewise? I had hobbies such as football, softball and golf (lotsa golf) to keep me busy over the last 15 years until I crushed a disc in my lower back about 2 years ago. Therefore I needed a less physical hobby as I await back surgery- at least that's how I explained it to my wife....The cornsnakes are enjoyable as they recline all over the cage and are rarely out of sight like the BRB's. They're also terrific eaters. They are only 6 or 7 months old I believe. Where abouts in NJ are you from? I'm from Boonton Township (Morris County). Talk to you later.

They top out at about same size, they are actually the same snake, the Texas being a subspecies of the Black Rat if you wanna get all zoological about it.

I know where Boonton is. I am in Woodbridge Township, little India section.

Hey John,

Don't worry about discussing colubrids. I yap about my Indigo all the time. The good thing about this forum is that nothing is really off topic, especially discussion about other reptiles. I think that's what makes this forum more enjoyable than most others.
