who are the behaviour experts?

maggie* Aug 28, 2003 07:20 PM

Hi all,
Today I held my new beardie up to Mortimer's cage and Mortimer (who was sleeping with one foot in his seed dish as he routinely does-funny) acted in a way I'd never seen before. He made a slithering almost snake like motion with his body. Then he inched forward and did it again until he was right up to the glass with his shoulders raised high off the ground on erect arms. Obviously a sign of aggression? Is this behaviour (pardon the Canadian sp.) exclusive to males? Do you think it was because the beardie was a different species? Does this mean he would react in a similar way to a new cagemate?
Hope someone can shed some light on this (I've got shedding on the brain )
maggie.

that sounds to me like maybe not so much aggression as in defensive to a new unknown creature. just kinda sneaking up on him to check him out without being seen.

As far as a cagemate, I think putting 2 uro's together it would be more like just all out battles if they don't like each other. Usually alot of biting can go on, puffing up, and just really different.

Whatever it is, sounds very interesting to see it!

If you want another uro but you are afraid it will fight with your first one i wouldn't be so scared. I have 6 uros in my BIG cage. 2 males and 4 females. It just depends on your uro, but mine even the males get along fine and everyone lives in peace with eachother. I have malis and geyri so they are a calm easy going species. But if you have moroccans i would be a little extra careful. Usually uros get along fine with eachother, but there are a few exceptions as always. So if you want to get another uro get it. They will most likey get along fine. They might nip eachother for the first few days, but after they should get along fine. I have had over 10 uros, and never had one incedent where they just dont get along. I think uros are good by themselves and are just as good with a few cagemates. During breeding season you see a lot of action. You get a sneak peak of what they do in the wild in your very own cage.

I have seen this behavior before. It is definitely aggression.
Unforunately, when I saw it there was no glass between cagemates and fighting did occur. Mine did puff up and hiss but the slithering you mentioned was part of it as well. Because of this occurance I am not a proponet of shared caging.
