Thayeri EGGS!! and a question....

waspinator421 Mar 20, 2008 03:00 PM

Well, Leeloo laid a clutch of 12 eggs this morning. I'm not sure if they are fertile, though. They were like little water bags, and some still have dents. I'm incubating them anyway, so we shall see what happens. I forgot to snap a picture of her on the eggs, but I'll get one up soon of the clutch.

Miss Bianca still hasn't laid hers yet, and I'm getting a bit concerned. I thought they were supposed to lay 7-14 days after their pre-lay shed. Leeloo laid hers on schedule, 8 days after her shed. It has been 17 days since Miss Bianca shed... way longer than I have ever heard of a snake laying. I know she is gravid, because I can feel the eggs.

Has any ever heard of eggs taking this long? I posted this in the Mexicana forum too.

Here are pictures of Leeloo's eggs right after I removed them. They don't look too promising. Some have un-dented slightly after being in the incubator for a few hours, though.

Yeah, I was a bit dissapointed that the first clutch of the year look like duds. She is a first time breeder, so I suppose I can't be too suprised.

Any thoughts on the other female I mentioned? Ever heard of a female laying good eggs after the 2-week mark? Since it is taking so long, I'm expecting hers will probably be duds too.

I seem to remember Applegate on his website mentioning that infertile eggs would often result with thayeri if the male was not cool enough during brumation. Might have been a different king, I don't remember.

I believe Zonata suffer the same really cool brumation requirement, I think greeri do too.

I decided my old sig was too big.

Hmmm... that is possible. I brumated all of my colubrids at around 60F. Is that not low enough for Thayeri? I know they are a cooler loving species. It would be good to know if I need to tweak my temps next winter.

my thayeri routinely brumated at 35-50...a much higher success rate than years they were only brumates at 50-60.

Ahhh.. that is probably my solution. Oh well, I guess I can hope for better luck next year. Thanks Russ.
