feeding Q

odin22 Mar 20, 2008 05:34 PM

Greetings

I have a tiny (compared to boas) baby cornsnake who is currently eating f/t pinky mice-- the smallest in the bag--twice per week. We've been feeding 2 on Sundays and 1 on Thursdays. Sometimes she's still hungry. Since she's the smallest we have, we want to use up all the smallest mice on her. Can she have 2 per feeding? More? What would be the right limit? I have no need to gorge her.

Three pinks per week for an '07 cornsnake is just fine, without seeing the snake, AND the size of the pinkies you're using, it's sort of hard to tell exactly. If the pinks are approx. 1 inch, or slightly bigger, and not mini "tic-tac" sized ones, it should do fabulous on three. But I wouldn't recommend overfeeding it as much as it will possibly accept. Overfeeding can lead to other problems too.

Hi

Actually, the pinky mice are only slightly bigger than a tic-tac, but then that's about the size of her head...and her body ain't much wider

Would you still keep her at 3?

Okay, If the pinks don't leave a slight visual lump, then I'd recommend feeding it two at a time. Under normal circumstances, a snake does well when fed a meal that approximates it's mid-body girth, or slightly larger. An '07 hatchling should be capable of eating larger pinks, so go with feeding it two and two on the schedule you mentioned earlier, and it will do fine. Then when you run out of the small surplus pinks, step it up to a size that will put a fair sized lump(not huge) twice a week. This will allow the snake to grow at a good rate.
