How do I get my baby gecko to feed?

unknown0 Mar 20, 2008 05:55 PM

I got a baby gecko from Petco. He seems to be getting used to his environment so that is good. I am having some problems feeding him. This is mostly because I never seem to find him awake, I am guessing when he is awake I am not there or sleeping. Can I leave the crickets inside the tank and just wait until he eats them? I usually take the crickets back legs off, that way they don't jump around as much, but I am a little scared that the crickets will attack him, or that he won't find them. He is pretty small, so this makes the tank seem huge (24x12x16). Anyways what should I do?

I tried feeding him in a smaller container but he gets all stressed and doesn't notice the crickets. How do I know when he is hungry? Also, returning him is not an option because I like him and want to keep him.

He is underweight for sure. Do you mean he is never awake at night? This is of concern and a vet visit would be in order. Have you notice him drinking and pooping?

Do not leave crickets in there if he is not active as you are correct and they could nip at him. The cage is a bit big for the little guy, especially if he's not completely well, you could consider some cardboard taped into place temporarily to reduce the length of the cage to more like 12".

Good luck.

He does walk around at night, it's just he is REALLY shy. Like I could turn the lights off and then come back and he is walking around, but as soon as he sees me he goes back to a hiding place. Also, it's hard for me to feed him because whenever I am around he is sleeping, and he hates it when I wake him up to feed him. I need to try and feed him when he is awake, which is very difficult.

He is going to the bathroom regularly, and I am pretty sure he is drinking water because in the morning the water dish is almost always empty. At the beginning he was feeding a little below average (like 3 crickets a day.) It was just today and yesterday I haven't gotten a chance to see him awake, so feeding him has been hard.
