finickey eating w/ my redtails

tyedor Mar 21, 2008 01:33 PM

hey,

I have a multi-level terrarium with four snakes; 2yr old male dh sunglow and female alb het snow(currently in same cage together and have been since very young, i think. 30x60x24 encloser). i also have a 1 yr old female ball python and a 1 yrold female brb.
Anyway, i am having trouble with the two redtails. sometimes they really go for it and sometimes i know that they are hungry because they are creeping around the cage all night, looking for food but when i go to feed them, they aren't interested.
i feed them in large tupperware-type containers. i give them live/knocked out rats. i give them a good wiggle and everything, but the seem like they are scared. i will leave them in with the rat for a bit and still nothing. do i need to put them in the container and wait longer till they aclimate? am i doing something wrong? my other snakes eat great. i know their temps are good. do i need to know some tricks?
thanks, Tye

Separate enclosures.

Prevents stress caused by moving them every time they need to eat.

Plus you really shouldn't be handling a boa after it eats, which you can't avoid in your current setup.

Feed f/t or p/k. Horrors have happened from stunned rats coming back around.

That male is likely mature, so could account for his not eating. And being housed with an immature female he could easily be stressing her out, which would account for her not eating.

thanks, i have an encloser all ready for her to move into. i just need to cut the plexi-glass. so you think i should be feeding them in their enclosure, to avoid the stress of me taking them out and putting them into the feeding encloser?

Sorry to cut in Chris,
You can feed them in there enclosure as long as they're not both in there.
