Forgive me for such a simple question but I have to ask.

1:1 means for example one cup water to one cup substrate?

The ratio is by weight not volume. For example, 50 grams of water to 50 grams of vermiculite.

Actually I like using the SQUEEZE METHOD. It works well and have never had a problem with it. You simply wet down the vermic your going to use for your eggs. Then you grab a handful and squeeze out the excess moisture until it stops dripping from your hand and sticks together. It needs to hold its shape and not crumble yet at the same time not be dripping. Do this method and you have the right amount of moisture.
