slug question

myotismn Mar 22, 2008 06:56 PM

When I got all of my snakes of of hibernation, most shed within 3-4 weeks after which I put them with a male. However I have one thayeri that seemed rather odd because she didn't shed with the others. She finally shed last week (8 weeks after coming out). Yesterday, I put a male with her. This morning she laid a couple of slugs. I don't know what to think of it. She ate well after coming out of hibernation and has always appeared healthy. Any thoughts? Is she still going to be able to breed this year?

I don't think you should try to run her through the breeding cycle again although she may do it on her own. In my experience, when a female throws slugs she will usually throw slugs again (2nd or 3rd clutch). Someone else may have experienced something different...again my experience.

There is a really good chance that this female started her cycle and that the last shed you got was her prelay shed. What part of the US are you in and how cool were they during hibernation?

Sorry to hear about the slugs.

Russ

Russ,
I live in MN and hibernating temps fluctuated a bit, but usually were between 45-55. It puzzled me the most because all my other snakes seemed to follow the usual pattern. I suppose there is always one that doesn't want to follow the mold.
