Sudden death

Esther Mar 22, 2008 09:04 PM

I know that this is not the whiptail forum, but there ISN'T one, so...I observed my NM whiptail earlier today, active and lively, traversing her tank. I've had her for a couple of years, she was WC but I don't think she was old.

Recently, she had laid eggs a couple of times, but I only found them when they had already desiccated. She had not deigned to use the humid hide I had provided.

And this afternoon, I found her stretched out as if sleeping, but I knew she was dead. Not a mark on her, no sign of illness whatsoever. Lively this morning, dead in the afternoon.

Anyone have any clue as to what could have happened to her? She was one of my big favs...

How recently was her latest clutch? She could have been egg bound?

No, she had obviously laid the eggs. She lacked the plumpness she had in the lower abdominal area that was obvious a couple days before. She looked as though she were peacefully asleep, but she was dead.

Such a shame , Don't know whats worse expecting it, or being confused and shocked by one that seemed fine, and this happens. Sorry for your lose, Sad!

Thanks, Eve. She was really a favorite of mine. Whiptails are hard to beat as pets, they are so lively and personable.

I have NO idea why she died. She looked quite fit and was very lively. No wasting away, no lesions, nothing at all.

The other whiptail, the western, is running around the tank as normal. I bet she misses her buddy. They had pseudo-copulated with one another. Now I will be looking for a new New Mexican whiptail on the classified, when it's warmer.
