Several weeks ago I predicted it would be by March first, but the weather turned cold. Somewhat unusual to see a zonata before the first calking. Not that I'm complaining.

Beautiful zonata. I was fully expecting to see my first pyro of the year last week, but the weather in southern AZ was just not cooperating.

I see sandstone.. must be a Coast mtn king. Is that from the coast range or one of the transverse ranges?

Coastal it is, as you've astutely discerned from the substrate. I'd work harder to find examples from other localities but the ones here are so easy to find, and so pretty, that you get used to not trying as hard as you have to in other places.
That said, I set out some cover a couple of years ago in a locality that by all accounts should not yield zonatas but I found a fresh shed the other day so they're there all right. The problem is that I foolishly chose a remote spot to lug all this scrap wood to, hence my wisecrack about doing without the arduous trek into rattlesnake infested rock.
