Emergency preperation...

Solaris16 Aug 28, 2003 09:30 PM

Hi Everyone!

I've had Myka for over a year now, and neither of my parents have a sweet clue how to care for her. She is 100% under my care, but I think it's a good idea for both of my parents to have a general understanding of her care and what to do in case something goes wrong with her while I'm not home.

I'm making a "What do I do if..." list for them, so if something goes wrong they can look the scenario up on the list and see what the appropriate way to act would be.

Any suggestions on what to put? I'm sort of stumped...I have a few that are mainly behavioral, I should have many more!

Thanks!

Wendy

Wendy hi. That is a great idea. Hmm im not sure what all to put on the list. Maybe your vet name and number, feeding instructions, maybe any little quirks she has, like things she likes or doesnt like you to do. I should do the same. I am lucky enough that my son and hubby also help in the care of Ozzy, so they could handle him if for some reason I couldnt. And as a extra bonus my neighbors son who is about 19 I think, is very experienced with reptiles, as well as his dad. The neighbor kids older brother had several snakes, turtles and lizards when he still lived at home. So if I were to have to leave out of town or something they said they would come take care of Ozzy. But anyway that is a great idea. Take care. Tami

I left out a copy of Melissa's book, a copy of ultimate iguana, and a schedule from 6am to 8pm of what lights should be going on, what the human has to do, and what the iguana will probably be doing. ("6 am, heat lamp and uv turn on. Heating pad and CHE turn off. 7:30: Open blinds, give bath, clean cage, change food" etc.) I also left a first aid kit and a have magnetic business cards of the vet and the emergency vet that stick onto the metal cage.

Some of my "what ifs" were:
*What if he sneezes?
*What if he poops in the cage, not the tub?
*What if I can't find him? Where does he hide when he's not in his cage?
*What if he head-bobs me or hisses or scratches me or whips or wiggles a lot or jumps or something?
*How do I pick him up if he's headbobbing or otherwise unhappy and I absolutely have to?
*What if the lights malfunction? How do the timers work, what do they go to, when to set them for?
*What cords are what, where are all the supplies and extra bulbs?
*When do I call the vet before calling Erin?
*What to do for minor injuries? (chin bumps, injured claw, injured humans)
*What if the power goes out?
*What if he won't eat?
*What can I bribe him with? (WHEAT BREAD!!!)
*What if he climbs where I can't get him?

Hope it helps.
