rattlemam:
Your post is not totally off topic as your immature red-tail has scales on its legs.

Where to you live and what will be the primary quarry once you get the hawk trained?

I species I study (Rubber Boa) has a number of eye color morphs. If I recall correctly, my son Ryan's tiercel red-tail had dark brown eyes whereas my hen had light gray eye color similar to those of your hawk.

He is just coming out of his moult now. I got him last year as a passage bird and he is just going into his second season now

rattlerman:
Thanks for responding. I live in W. Oregon and would you believe our most common quarry is the Eastern Cottontail --transplanted from Ohio and Illinois in 1939 and 1941. With some regularity, our tails also took Calif. Ground Squirrels, Dusky-footed Wood Rats, and our native Brush Rabbit, also is a species of cottontail. On occasion, other quarry taken were chimpmunks, pheasants, mountain cottontails, black-tailed jack rabbits, gopher and garter snakes, etc.--whatever they could get their talon on. The are superb hunting hawks!

I was given a female Harris' Hawk so release my hen Red-tail after her third season. The tail was just as proficient
as the Harris' species but (in my opinion) the latter is a much more fun hawk to fly, paticularly in cooperation with my beagle.

Beutifal bird, my father and I were looking into falconry not but 6 months ago. We both mutually decided though that we did not have that kind of free time to dedicate, if you dont mind me asking whats your schedule like during the year?
