Killing an EDB in Georgia?

Senior Mar 24, 2008 08:13 AM

I recently was watching "Survivor Man" and he did a 7 day stint in a south Georgia swamp. He killed and ate an EDB while there and for some reason I thought they were protected?

Anyone that can answer this thanks in advance.

According to Georgia DNR's web site, all snakes EXCEPT venomous are protected. I'm just going by a quick search, so there could be some exception I'm missing.

I've noticed on that show though, that he does things like killing small animals and cutting plants in places where I would bet that everything is protected, National Parks for instance. I assume that either the show is able to get some sort of permit ahead of time, or perhaps since he's in an actual "survival" situation, there may be some exception to those protections. I'm just guessing though.

I couldn't recall if the EDB was on the federal endangered species list or not...which would also count. Just an odd memory floating around in the back of my mind.

Absolutely not knocking the show...it is refreshingly non-hype/showoff and he generally just plays it safe, gets tired, cold, hungry and quite often just fails etc.

Definitely not on the Federal list.

Yeah, I enjoy his show too. I have one major issue with the host of another show who/which shall remain nameless. Being a little over the top to make the show more interesting is one thing (and personally, I don't care that much if he stays in hotel occasionally) but what he purports to be doing is showing people how to survive in an emergency. You DON'T do that by rock climbing or swinging on rotten tree branches when you don't have a VERY good reason for it. A broken leg 50 miles from help is death...

You called it Larry. I'm a fan of both shows but on MvW he often seems to be over-caffeinated and running amuk. Even a twisted ankle would be a very bad idea in a true survival situation, I would be pretty careful.

On Surviviorman I watched the EDB-for-dinner episode and was quite surprised by it--my assumption was that he had some kind of permit or exemption, but my thought was that if EDBs are truly endangered it doesn't send a great conservation message. Although the EDB episode was less gross than the one where he swallows a young garter snake in about one gulp!

Unbelievable what you can get away with when you're pretending...I'de be lying if I said i didn't like the show though lol
