Just saying HI & where I've been lately

Mike H. Mar 24, 2008 01:18 PM

Just wanted to say hello to all my friends over here...I don't post much anymore, I've re-directed my snake hobby.

I started breeding almost 20 years ago, it was Amazon Tree Boas that got me hooked. They were always my #1 favorite species, although I got sidetracked by the fun, predictability, & marketability of colubrid breeding. I bred a lot of different species and produced some cool stuff over the past 10 years.

Well, I am happy to say I have sold ever colubrid I had and am working exclusively with Amazon Tree Boas now, not even focusing too much on breeding them, just maintaining a snakeroom full of them (all in display cages, no storage boxes) just for my own personal enjoyment. I have Amazons that range in market value from $25 - $2,500 and I love them all the same

I still visit here fairly regular, I still love Corns. As a matter of fact, I still have a trio of my Aztec Okeetees...after all the years I put into that project, I just couldn't let them go.

Those are some great pics Mike! I have been to your site many times and enjoyed all the info there. I have even been tempted to wade into Amazons a couple of times by the animals I have seen! I worked with, and enjoyed ATB, when I worked at a zoo but have never had any in my personal collection. Maybe some day I will have some at home. Keep up the great work with ATBs.

Rob

Thanks Rob, I get great satisaction when I hear that my site helped you...that's the main reason I have it up, as an information tool to help ATB keepers successfully keep their snakes alive and thriving

ATBs are, IMO, the most fascinating snake on earth....but not for everyone. Interest will start to skyrocket now that there are 3 known genetic morphs, but I hope the people getting into them will be the people who truly enjoy the species.

for corn breeders looking for something new to try.

They combine the endless color possibilities of corns with a slightly (but not TOO much) more challenging keeping culture, and best of all, their genetics are almost uncharted territory - a new chance to become a pioneer all over again! Not to mention that they look GREAT in a well planted viv! Who wouldn't be excited by them!

Mike H. Mar 25, 2008 02:34 PM

You're absolutely right Kathy...but for me it was in reverse I guess, I got into corns years after having been working with ATBs...I called them the terrestrial ATBs back then

With the incredible things coming from the Tiger morph, Leopard morph, GHI's "candycane" lines (genetic morph or selectively bred trait, not yet proven) and with Tom Burn's albino which should have bred this season....the ATBs will soon find a prominent place in herpetoculture

Having been a serious ATB lover of all of their natural colors/patterns for almost 2 decades, I must admit I'm a bit sad to think the species might soon get exploited by new exciting "morphs" and their money making potential...but that's just me

Mike,
Sounds like you're really enjoying the hobby. I’m glad for you. I don’t post much here anymore either. I simply don’t have the time anymore. I can see myself following your path in the not so distant future. Except, for me, its Nicaraguan boas. I really enjoy them. I would LOVE to create more naturalistic displays for my snakes….and even some super large communal enclosures like you see at many zoos.

Many reptile keepers (myself included) start off small with the intention of keeping aesthetically pleasing setups only to see our collections grow & before too long, practical solutions take over. The other dilemma many keepers (including myself) face is whether or not to keep a variety/large number of species versus concentrating all efforts on a few select species (like you with ATBs).

I teach hs biology and I keep a bunch of herps in my classroom in natural enclosures so I try to keep the best of both worlds. However, lately I find myself spending more and more time, with my 3 yr old daughter, feeding & cleaning & enjoying the few natural setups I have in my reptile room at home. I’ve really come a LONG way by eliminating many projects that simply would have taken years to see to fruition. I have narrowed down the collection A LOT this past year BUT eventually I’ll narrow things down even more.

BTW....Do you have a pic of an angle showing your whole reptile room?

When I had 100+ breeder colubrids it looked like this on 3 walls.

Now, with nothing but tree boas I have two walls of these.

I'm currently starting to incorperate Zoo-Meds, I have 6 so far, of 2 different sizes.
