Enclosure

BoaGal Mar 24, 2008 07:43 PM

This is the biggest plastic container I can find. It's not clear, but I can't complain for the price. Dimensions are: 19.63" x 42.23" x 21.7"

I figure I can cut a square out of the top and put screen mesh over it so I can put a light on there. If I use flexwatt, can that be mounted on the inside of this? I would definitely use a thermostat/rheostat to control temperature.

Would this enclosure be ok for an adult Colombian BCI?

Here's and idea my friend Chris tried;

Ever thought of turning sideways laying it down and trying that.

It may or may not work for eavy bodied boids and I have yet to attempt one myself. But lots of aboreal keepers have had success.

Cheers

Depends how the boa is raised. If it is raised and fed like most Colombians are, no it will not be big enough. If it is raised properly, that will be large enough for an adult male, but not a female.

Don't do screen. Drill holes in it for ventilation, cut out a window in the top or side and install acrylic/plexiglass for viewing. Use flexwatt, NEVER use it inside a cage. Underneath. Get a digital proportional thermostat like Helix or Herpstat and you'll be set.

I agree with Chris. Will add my own opinion here -- Don't really like it. Floor space more important than height.
Try Iris brand containers. The easiest and best method to add vent holes is to use a cheapo soldering iron. It deburrs them and anneals them at the same time (no stress risers and no sharp edges to the holes).
I'll go find a picture.

I did find this one as well. Dimensions: 14"H x 52.12"W x 20.12"D. However, shipping is outrageous. I wish I could find something local.

I've looked at WalMart, but the biggest I could find was 116 quart, which measures about 15"H 33"L 20"D. Do you think they have a cagalogue or something from which I could order something bigger?

They only have them at X-mas time 19.99 (for xmas trees).

SRX Mar 24, 2008 11:49 PM

The Container Store also carries the Iris VE175(the box with the red top) year round. Walmart only carries them seasonally for Xmas trees.

BoaGal Mar 25, 2008 09:32 AM

I just went to containerstore.com and couldn't find it. Is it something they only have at their store and not online?

Keep trying. Those xmas tree tubs are usually seasonal, but you might get lucky and find someone with overstock. Don't rule out places like target, kmart, lowes and home depot.

I believe that BIG adults should be kept in "normal" cages.
However, these big tubs do quite well, for temporary housing.

I don't planon using them, but I think I'm going to buy a few of those xmas tree tubs, next year. It seems that they are always needed, when theiy're no longer available.

In regards to height, 12" seems to be the height of the shortest cages. That's an instance of stackables and optimizing the number of cages per stack. That works well for breeders and breeder hopefulls, who plan on housing many animals.

For a pet owner, the taller cages allow for a more asthetic view. They allow for climbing branches and such.

The thing to remember, is that "typically" BCI/BCC and a few others, are mostly terrestrial. So the amount of floor space provided to them, is very important. Taller is nice though, if you have the abundance of space.

On a side note, taller cages also mean more space the heat up. So they may take a little more heat, to maintain your gradients.

I'm just a novice myself. I hope I was able to provide some helpfull info. I apologize if any info is incorrect. I'm sure others can point out any corrections, if need be.

Good luck.

That is an Iris tub (Container Store). The low and long one. More than 10 years old. Don't know the number. The opaque plastic material they are made of melts much better than the solid colored plastics. I had a jig to get the holes so close and with the pattern. The soldering iron in the picture is not the one that made those holes. Just there as an example. The one that made those holes is a larger diameter. Sometimes you get a few rough spots or burrs on the outside, but never on the inside and that's what matters. Nice and smooth. Try the Container Store, if you have any near you.

This is what I keep my boas in. It is 4' tall x 4' long x 2' wide. My husband and I made these and offer them for sale if you would be interested.

In my limited experience, they do not work well. Not enough floor space and all that extra un-used height. *Maybe* for a boa 3' or so, but not over 5' IMO. I used something just like that to temporarily house two 5-6' boas and both got a bad case of nose rub, the humidity got way too high in the tubs as well. (I only put air holes in, not a full screen vent.) Just not a good experience, but that was my only one. I use a variety of other caging, even small tubs for babies, but they are clear and shallow, more floor space instead of height and no problems.
Just adding in my $0.02!

You're all saying that floor space is better than height. I agree with you, but a while ago when I asked about the minimum height requirement for a Colombian BCI, no one responded.

So, how much height do they really require?

About a foot for a large adult female should be adequate I think.
Hopefully others will comment.

A cage with a front door needs to have enough height to provide an opening that you can safely reach in and pull out a big female. So whatever that height may be depending on the boa.

For large tubs such as the new ARS-9006 you can have less height because you don't have the door opening dilemma. I believe their tubs are 9" tall. Freedom Breeder are around 10". One breeder did mention that he had an exceptionally large female that when she ovulated in his FB touched the top. So consider that as well.
