Can we call this a rescue??

Novice_Charmer Mar 24, 2008 11:24 PM

I answered a post on craigslist for a "free 13ft Albino Burmese just come pic him up".I decided for some reason it was my duty to get it before "one of those" got it because "it would be cool".
I show up about 1 hour later and there he is OUTSIDE in some kind of large wire bird cage, with a "sheet to keep him warm" and half of an old plastic dog kennel as protection. As far as a heat source goes,he had..................ambient temperature. Not a drop of water to be found. He had recently had a shed and it was all over the floor in about 100 flaky pieces, the rest is still stuck in pieces all over him. He's dirty....I think.I got him here and in the tub with some kinda warm water tryin to raise his temp and see if any of the skin will soak off. He's hissing a bunch, and the only good thing I can say about that is his breathing sounds strong and un-ubstructed,I don't see any bubbles or stuff around his nose or mouth yet.I don't know if it's because he's warming up or I just didn't notice in my rush to get him home,he's got a lot of pink on him.He seems to be moving OK,and his eyes are clear and he's checking out everything with his tongue flicking away and doesn't seem TOO skinny.I'm pretty sure he's not 13ft either he's smaller than my female and she's just over 12,he may be 9 or 10'.I have attached some before pics here for you guys, just to see what you guys think.Thanx for reading my novel!OH and from here on out he will be known as Ty Webb!~

You know, you're right. He has purple in between the yellow pattern rather than white,is this normal with the A melanistics when they get larger??I was just wondering because neither of my younger ones look that way.

Yes, that's a rescue, for sure. It's almost guaranteed that it would've fallen into the wrong hands had you not acted so quickly. Good job!

As for the coloration, it's hard for me to tell from the photos what genetic possiblities it has. Given the conditions it was kept in and the snake's conditions, I'd wait a few weeks or so to see if there's an issue or not with it's skin. At the moment, it definitely doesn't appear to be a typical albino.

Some people have all the luck.

Catch ya later!

I'm certainly not a breeder, but the typical amels that I've seen are just yellow and white/lt yellow. That is the coloration of my albino. He's banana yellow with white and lt yellow markings. There's no pink and no purple. Yours is very interesting. I'd like to know what they call that!

Good job on the save!

Please keep us posted as I would really like to see what the genetics on that animal have to offer . Thank you for Answering that Add , probably a pet to someone that bought him to brag about having a python...had parties to watch him feed over the years and then.....obviously got board of him and found more important things to do then care for him properly...good to see he's on good hands now . Best of luck and Kepp me posted .

Well, even though we got all the loose skin off,he's still in pretty rough shape. All the scales on the top half of his body are dry and kind "wrinkled up" I think he may have a sunburn from having no cover. The good new is,he's drinking and I got him to eat last night with all my others.I tried for the first time ever to feed my snakes something that wasn't alive.I got a 10lb bag of chicken quarters and they went through them like kids through candy, and he joined right in!The only draw back I've noticed so far is,chicken is GREASY! LOL Anyway,it was a lot cheaper than I was used to,and also much easier to come by than feeders.I'm gonna fatten him up and see if the next time he sheds again maybe he'll clear up a little, but at least we got him warm and eating,so that's two steps in the right direction anyway.

Beautiful animal and I'm glad you were there to help. I have seen albino burms kept outside in the past and I think your right as far as the sunburn thing. The ones I saw were very pink and dirty looking. Good luck with that animal!

I know this was a common practise years ago, but I'm not sure a straight chicken quarter diet is the most nutricious(sp) way to go.

Burms need fur and/or feathers for roughage . Have also heard that an all bird diet will give them a very loose stool. Just some things I've heard.

We have a big burm that eats roosters.... but she gets the whole bird-- feathers, beak, feet, fat and all....

I just can't imagine going to walmart and getting a bag of chicken quarters--- fry 1/2 for my kids and feed the other 1/2 to my snake...

It makes sense... i just would never have thought....

why buy a cow when you can get a pound at walmart... i guess...

very interesting.

Oh-- and the big girl on roosters- doesn't have that loose of a stool-- she poops odd looking things though-- you can tell they are feathers. (were feathers)-- grey matter-- almost looks like grey hay or straw. mixed with the standard yellow/white urates....

odd looking stuff-- but doesn't smell NEARLY as bad as the rabbit eaters. When the rabbit eaters poo-- all i have to do is open the door to the room to notice--- not with her though...

LOL, beaks and feets?

I'm sure it's better to feed whole food items as opposed to skinned or plucked ones

Weeeeeell it's like this.I was feeding her rabbits, but the old Cherokee lady that I was buying them from ran out and couldn't keep up (with big ones). Then I decided that my female Burm was able to take some bigger meals so the lady started selling me small (15-25lb) razorbacks and she put them down no problem, and she was digesting them just as fast as rabbits....but she ran out of those too :@). So I was talking to a local girl who has a pretty big Retic and she said she feeds chicken quarters to him, and it looked (from the pics) that it was in pretty good shape, so I figured, why not?I had never fed anything dead up to that point because my Burm had always refused it,but she hadn't eaten in about 16 days so I had to do something. The quarters I got still have lots of bone and fat and skin on them, just no feathers. After I danced them around FOREVER on the tongs she nailed one, then the next four went down one right after the next. She took them raw,I just nuked them enough to warm up and kill off anything that might have grown on them during the thaw.I had about 4 lbs left so decided to try them with my smaller Burms and my RTBs as well and it was a mixed response,so we will be back rats as soon as I can find some.I did realize that my big female Burm was looking to eat again already this morning,so I went for the whole bird theory in the meat department this time. She knocked out a 16lb Butterball this afternoon.I remembered what someone on here stated about organs and what not for the complete meal,so I emptied the bag with the neck and liver and other stuff back in it (minus the bag :@) ) I don't know about smelly poop yet,but I do know feather-less birds make for some slippery snakes! HA HA HA Anyhoo,it's been a week since the quarters and no adverse effects as of yet,but soon as big rabbits become available we'll be back to basics. Thanx to all for the thoughts from all angles!

That is very interesting....

I may have to try a butter ball--- the "beaks and feets" are quite odd looking--- its like WTF is that?! ... oooh yha--- its digested... rooster...

lol

if i ever loose my supply of 1$ rats and 8$ rabbits and 10$ roosters--- i'll try a chicken quarter bag...
