Growing nicely

dekaybrown Mar 25, 2008 09:50 AM

Our corn snake CY.

He is the most mellow snake I have ever been around, yet he turns into a real killer when I toss in a hopper

CY escaped once, but we found him hiding in the sofa right next to his (now far more secure) enclosure. Went right up the power cord to his heat rock, and slipped through the crack.

I have since drilled a hole and passed the power cord through that.

Saved all 4 of his sheds in the supply drawer.

Peace,
Wayne A. Harvey

OK. since no one else has replied, i will... heat rocks are not good for snakes... they can burn themselves b/c they are not very smart animals. if you want heat, get an under tank heater and stick to the bottom. heat rocks can get too hot, can malfunction, catch fire, etc. why do they make heat rocks? simple- people buy them. so personally, i'd get rid of the heat rock- the snake looks good, but do you really want to take a chance??

My heat rock is the top notch Zoo Med with a thermal cutout & temp control, and is set at about 50%.

Trust me, I am in that cage every single day, often more than once, and I place my palm on that rock every time.

Cy never sits on it anyhow, his "warm" hide is next to it, and when he is digesting he sits in his hide, not on the rock.

The enclosure is custom built from 3/4" counter top board with a tempered glass front only.

An under tank heater will not penetrate a floor that thick.

Thanks for the advice.

Where in pray tell did you gather I was jumping all over you?

Did my words appear harsh?

My humble apologies if you feel as if I was angry in any way.

Did someone forget their alprazolam this morning?

Peace,
WAH

The first two herps I ever owned died by heatrock and I didn't even know that was the cause at the time. The heatrock I had wasn't on a thermostat, though. I don't see much of a problem with yours if it is on a thermostat. I just know I won't use them again.

Beautiful snake, by the way.
