new tank sand question

timd35 Mar 25, 2008 10:30 AM

Howdy!

I just moved my beardie into his/home permanent home. The home is 48 inches long and 20 wide. I put down sand as the substrate (I had him on reptile carpet while he was younger, he is about 12 inches now). I was just curious how much sand to put down? I have it about half an inch deep now. Is that deep enough...too deep?

Thanks!

Tim

I personally think 14" or bigger would be better... before putting in sand. As for sand depth, half an inch sounds good.. any deeper and I always find the dragons look like they are floundering...their feet are not designed for deep soft sand...but for firmer footing.

I use sand in all my enclosure for adults and sub-adults. (12" is my rule of thumb) My sand is 2" deep, any shallower and liquids when they go to the bathroom will pass through the sand. Ideally you want to be able to scoop under the soiled sand so you can get it all out.
