the necropsy .....

annaisagecko Mar 25, 2008 11:58 AM

i just noticed that neither me nor my mom posted the necropsy results for larry so here they are,

they found bacteria in her lungs and liver,

and something they really found interesting is that she had old scar tissue in her heart (fibrosis) that had to of been from years ago, so they think she had a gecko heart attack,

well thats it so, thanks again for all the help given to as while we were going through this and for answering all the stupid little questions i've though of

Anna.

do you know if they cultured the bacteria? A thorough vet should have identified the strain, which would help you know what you are trying to get rid of...also whether the cause of death was the heart issue (old age?) or the bacteria- some will cause more health problems than other types of germs.

i don't recall the vet saying what kind but she gave us directions on how to clean the cage to get rid of it,

and she did say she was getting up there in age, but they didn't know what the mane cause of death is, but we really think it was her heart because she was med stride heading to her favorite hide, and not curled up or anything.

I think you are probably right- for something that sudden I'd go with a heart attack rather than bacterial infection, which would generally be a slower demise. It is true that most anti-bacterial products (like bleach) kill 99 percent of bacteria strains, so you are already in pretty good shape. Maybe the vet did ID the bacteria, and determined it was one that the bleach (or whatever she told you to do) would take care of. Vets probably dont make it a point to use big scientific terms for bacteria when dealing with the under-16 set. Let me know how the stick baking goes!!

Thanks for the update, this is the first reported gecko heart attack I think on this board. Interesting that is was probably a combination of the stress of the infection on the heart and maybe old age. Not at all what any of us guessed.

Good luck with the cleaning, know there are those of us here that have had to do that too. (just don't use too much bleach like we did, we probably hurt OUR lungs)

Keep in touch and let us know what is new. You've become part of our family and we really appreciate your dedication and it is interesting to hear the Dr's reports, we all get to learn and hopefully we can say she passed without pain.

Take care!
