have boxies up from hibernation yet? Our two smallest easterns were up this weekend when we returned after being out of town for 5 days. They were both bright eyed and still heavy, but then yesterday they decided it wasn't quite time yet and burrowed back under. The three-toes have little holes where they poke their heads out so they should come up in a week or so I would guess based on past years routine, it's still a bit cold here though, but it's getting close. I guess I'm really anxious, we miss seeing them in the mornings before work. Hope everyones box turtles come out of hibernation healthy and hungry.

No, but several of mine are very near the surface, so they should be up soon. I think that the weather is forecast to be quite warm in my area in the coming week, so I may see some then.

I had one up the other day, but not really moving around, just looking around. The others are still buried, but near the surface. (all 3 toed). We live in Central TX.

That kinda suprises me that they aren't active in Texas by now, I figured in the south they would aready be out earlier this month, guess I was way, way WRONG! Is it still freezing at night even though the day temps are warmer?

I thought they would be too. We were still getting into the low 40s here until this week. they should start waking up soon though.

Mine are coming up now...weeks later than in any other year since moving down South.

StephF Mar 27, 2008 10:33 AM

Ok, this morning I found the first one up and around... Time to get out the notebook.

kensopher Mar 27, 2008 02:45 PM

Well, we're in full swing here. I don't know what it is about today, as the temperature isn't all that high, but my turtles and all the wild baskers are out in force! I saved two Eastern painteds off of the roads this afternoon.

It is tough this time of year, when the lack of greenery allows a good line of sight, to avoid crashing my vehicle as I swing my head around wildly trying to see all of the baskers in the roadside ponds.

Lucky you. We got 3 more inches of snow last night.
Has anybody got any pictures of spring with turtles in them. I've forgotten what spring looks like............
We've gotten over 90 inches of snow this winter.........

boxienuts Mar 28, 2008 12:30 PM

Yah, I know exactly what you mean, it's hard to keep my eyes on the road when I drive to and from work in the spring, because I drive by a large lake and a flood area of the river that feeds into the lake, all kinds of wildlife this time of year.

I live in deep Southeast texas. Mine have been out and around for a month. During the night they burrow under pine straw and again during midday, but they are up and around, eating well and hopefully breeding soon.

Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!1
Thanks for the photo! It cheered me up considerablly. Today all the snow was washed away with rain. Maybe spring is coming after all........ All I can say is that it is lovely weather for ducks!

9boxies Mar 27, 2008 08:30 AM

A couple of days ago I had 4 boxies up and about. They all got a good drink of water.......ate a couple of worms and some tomato and squash and after a bit of sunning went back into their cubbies. The weather has started warming up nicely the past week or so, though there are days the temp dips into the low 60's and the nights are quite chilly. I suspect it won't be long though and all of mine will be up for the spring. ...9boxies

Don't EVEN talk to me! (she says as she looks out the window at the huge snow flakes and remembers that the weatherman predicted 5 inches of snow tonight!)

This lake effect stuff is for the birds......... They cancelled school again today, so at least I didn't have to go in to work.

I share your pain, we woke up to a white winter wonderland this morning, its been a long nasty winter, but the sun came out and it's all gone now, my ponds had a thin sheet of ice in the morning, but I'm still planning on getting the pumps running this weekend anyway. My two little easterns were back up again this morning, I guess if they are still up this weekend I might give them a soak and see if they have any interest in a nightcrawler or reptimin for a starter snack before they (hopefully) all come up and go back outside in a week or so.
