The Barkers on Burmese distribution/map

brhaco Mar 25, 2008 08:28 PM

Dave and Tracy Barker have released a couple of thoughtful and very well documented analyses related to the recent controversy. The article on distribution is being published in the Chicago herp bulletin:

* Comments on a Flawed Herpetological Paper and an Improper and Damaging News Release from a Government Agency

*The Distribution of the Burmese Python, Python molurus bivittatus

Both are available in pdf format on their website at:

Excellent research! Shows there is a strong preference for certain habitats not supported by the Rodda and Reed USGS report which basically defrauded the U.S. public of our hard earned tax dollars. Please write your U.S. representatives to discontinue funding for such research programs at the USGS and write the USGS to stress this type of study where Rodda and Reed essentially lied to the American public seriously damaged their integrity. There is probably a law that says government employees cannot make false reports. Below are some address/email connections to follow up on for responses.

Has there ever been a documented case where anyone was attacked by a Burmese Python that was not connected to a feeding mistake?

Years ago, the ocean's apex predator, the Killer Whale, was thought to be a man-eater. However, it has since been demonstrated that the Killer Whale is only dangerous if you happen to be a Seal or some sort of animal that it recognizes as its natural prey.

Could the Burmese Python also be such an animal? Is the Burmese Python the subject of unfounded public hysteria, as the Killer Whale once was?
