Strange Behavoir??

Leo_Lover07 Mar 26, 2008 06:50 PM

Houdini, one of my females, has a strange habit. Every night about 7 times she crawls to the top of her log and stares at the cieling. Sometimes she finds a way to get on the screen and crawls upside down until she loses grip and thumps back to the ground. Other than this she is showing typical behavoir and eating healthy. She's caged next to my other 3 leos, could she be trying to get in with them???

I have a female who used to skydive off the shelf in her tank. It's a 45 gal, and I installed a shelf about 7 inches from the top, a little over a foot from the "ground". Almost every night she would spend a good hour or so climbing up to the shelf, and then jumping off, legs splayed out like a parachuter. Curiously, the behavior actually caught on with another of my females in the same tank, though that one's always been crazy (she's now by herself). The one still in that tank still does it occasionally, and actually may be increasing again with the warmer weather. My opinion is that she is prob bored and looking to explore some new territory, see some new surroundings. Maybe it's time for a cage rearrange, and/or more frequent handling. That's my guess.

Just for injury prevention, I would suggest a lower climbing platform so she can't reach the ceiling. It's just not a good idea, their claws aren't really made to support their whole body upside down like that, not like a tree dwelling gecko can. Not to mention the hard fall at the end.

My geckos always try to get out when I remove the screen lid. They stand on their hind legs and scratch at the glass. I guess being trapped inside a glass cage isn't their cup of tea. I also suggest lowering the height of what they can crawl up.
