I posted a wildly popular entry a few days ago about finally using the damp towel on top of the cage to increase humidity. Well, official results are in, as I woke up this morning to a perfect shed from Dexter! Humidity reading still around 60%.
A quick background: humidity before towel was just over 30%, and Dexter was obviously having trouble shedding in that environment. All my snakes were. I solicited advice and, as always, got many thoughtful and helpful replies. But among them was the very simple solution to low humidity of placing a damp towel over the top of the cage. No change in substrate, virtually no effort on my part at all in fact.
So when Dexter's eyes went cloudy the next time I tried the towel and did not soak him (I had resorted to soaking before sheds). Humidity went to 60% and he shed on his own in one perfect piece this morning!
So thank you to whoever suggested that a while back, and I highly recommend this for those having humidity problems. Here on the eastern seaboard humidity might not be a problem in another month or so, but I sure need the help now.
