Took the cheap way out-- and paid for it

OKReptileRescue Mar 27, 2008 02:18 PM

Well-- i posted a while back about wanting to get a blood-- we went to the arlington show, and found several there. Prices ranged from 85$ on up to a few hundred.
We debated between the 85$ one and the 125$ ones--- I liked both of them-- but decided that we'd spent enough $ on the trip-- and went the cheap way.

We were told that he was a great eater -- f/t or live rat pinkies.

We've offered food several times now-- with no luck.

Last nite (this morning?) around 2 am-- I put a rat pup in the tub with him to leave over nite-- he was rather PO'd when i opened the tub- which was odd. Seems like he was great at the show, then slowly got more and more aggressive....

now he's dead.

I bring dozens of animals back from the brink of death on a monthly basis-- and rarely loose one--- but I loose a cheaply bought, CB, "great eater" -- baby blood....

chaps my hide really.....

*GRRR*

Beth-
Really sorry to hear about your misfortune...However, I still wouldn't assume that a higher price for a Blood makes it a better animal. Many breeders will ask $85 for a very healthy, pretty snake. In my opinion, the main thing to determine is the integrity and knowledge of the vendor, along with, obviously, a close inspection of the animal.
I also usually prefer to buy from local vendors at the larger shows, since the rigors of transporting reptiles long distance may put them at greater risk for health problems. Just my $.02!

All the best-

The same thing happened just recently to someone I work with. They bought a ball python (their first snake) for their son for a pretty high price and it refused every meal and died a few weeks later. I steered them towards a local breeder who sold them another one for half the price that is a great eater and very healthy. I myself bought my first blood for $65 on a whim (not the best idea but it worked out) and he's now around 3 yrs old, he's a very easy keeper - he was VERY forgiving of all the newbie mistakes that I made - and he was an excellent eater right from the start. So I agree that its all in the breeder you get the animal from. Don't be afraid of a low price if you know where the animal is coming from.

Sorry for your loss, Beth. Cheaper, more expensive...it could have happened either way. Don't let this unusual - even as you stated - situation set you back. Don't blame yourself and instead look forward to helping another creature out there like you've been doing!

That's really sad. Is this your first blood?

OKReptileRescue Mar 29, 2008 08:21 PM

yes-- We'd been waiting for one to come through the rescue, that we could keep and use for education-- never got one so we decided to buy one. I did a lot of research and decided that the bad rap they get wasn't accurate---

we looked at so many, and i can still see the ones I 'almost' got ---

uuuugh--

I will probably get another, I will just be a lot more selective this time... and probably shell out a bit more for it.
