why would you stress your animal out like that? it doesn't make sense...if he's fine with you handling him but not being on the floor, you should probably just handle him. when a monitor does that, it's a clear sign that they're unhappy, feel threatened, and are very stressed out.

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 02:35 AM

no its a sine that its a nile monitor thats not use to being out in the open yet.. hes getting to the size where i want him to get use to roaming around the house more.. starting with the reptile room where he can get in the least amount of trouble..

to think that you can do almost anything with a nile that age and not get a threat posture and a occational tail whip is rediculous... hes not always like that.. but he was getting all moody so after the first whip or two i figured it was a good time to turn on the camera

swilson86 Mar 29, 2008 03:41 AM

dude...a house has nothing that the monitor needs. it's pointless and rather stupid to let a monitor free roam in your house, even if it's only one room. there's more of a reason than just confining the animal to a certain space to keeping it in a cage...

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 03:52 AM

i guess i enjoy sitting on the coutch watching him climb up my blinds and get into mistif.. i enjoy handling and interacting with my monitor.. i handle him about 2 or 3 times a week usually for around 10 to 20 min at a time.. no problom.. no agression.. he trys to get down and ocationaly i let him .. no big deal.. its only on a rare occation that i get the threat response

jobi Mar 28, 2008 03:01 PM

you obviously dont have the understanding to keep these animals, one thing I like about nils they will teach you respect.

some find this learning process painfull, others find it rewarding, hopefully your in the second group of keepers?

swilson86 Mar 28, 2008 04:19 PM

wow, that's a beautiful nile. is it your's?

jobi Mar 28, 2008 04:25 PM

no it was photographed in Kenya, dont know the photograph.

I do keep the same local but cant post any new photos yet.

jobi Mar 28, 2008 04:36 PM

befor and after, he's even larger now and much more friendly.

give them time and let them come to you, nils are not mean nor vicious, they are inteligent, inquisitive and gentile when respected.
regardless of what every one or anyone says, I strongly belive they are the best medium to large captive monitor.

MikesMonitors Mar 28, 2008 04:55 PM

Steeve
Could you post a photo or two of the Jobiensis you posted the other day?
I would love to see that beauty!

sorry Mike but that female yellow head isnt mine,I dont have full body shot on this pc (sorry , however hears a photo of mine. surly you alredy know that yellow head jobiensis dont have the nice olive green dorsal coloration and they have little or no blue on tail, I guess thats the price to pay for such a prety face?

I crossed this femal with a regular male, hopfully she will nest soon? yellow heads are very shy compared to regulars.

MikesMonitors Mar 28, 2008 05:33 PM

Steeve
She looks real nice in the face, I wish I could see more of her.
Do you know the locality of the "yellow head"?
I had a female Maruke(sp?) with similar colors on the throat, no yellow but very blue in the face and purple on her throat.
I just dug up all of my old still photos, and there she was.
She too was very shy!
Good luck with yours!

I will take a few good photos for you and post them asap.

they are from the papuan side of the island, as with all the blue tail complex inland individuals have very little blue while costal morphs have very ritch blues.

cheers

swilson86 Mar 28, 2008 07:47 PM

wow, that is a ridiculously gorgeous nile.

chuck911jeep Mar 29, 2008 11:04 AM

He Steeve!
How are you jedi? I'm happy you took those back.
My biggest one is like your first pic, maby a little more. The other one grow only a couple inch since last year but is a real looker. Maybe it's a dwarf? Hahahaha!
Take care my friend.

jobi Mar 29, 2008 02:41 PM

I sure hope they are smaller then ornatus.

congratulation on your 25 ornatus eggs from last night, best of luck with them.

cheers!

chuck911jeep Mar 30, 2008 04:50 PM

If incubation go well there is a pair for you mr friend.
Take care

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 02:49 AM

dont have the understanding my ass. im sorry that is a extreamly judgemental statement. i left him alone in the room to roam.. walked in.. he was pissed as all hell and i had the camera in hand.. i love the attitude and he is actually quite tame under normal circomstances. is it wrong for me to enjoy my monitor even when he is being defensive?

this is his cage... when he grows it will too. but it should speek for my husbanry

chuck911jeep Mar 29, 2008 11:00 AM

Only watch few second...
Sorry my friend but when i see someone cornering a nil like that with nothing more to do than making a pissed off video, i also ask myself serious questions about your nile behavior understanding.
It's too late for you my friend, now your face are in is mind for a good while. Hope you will like 6 foot pissed off nile cause that's exactly what you will get.
I didn't told you this to be rude. Every captive lizard deserve a better life than being a pissed off video star.
Take care!

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 11:22 AM

no... not at all... because my nile realy isnt even all that agressive.. you say my monitor diserves better.. well do you keep niles? i know many of you do.. can any of you that do keep niles honistly tell me that they never attempt to whip you or give you a threat dispaly? I guarantee every nile keeper hear has been whipped at. and been like "dam that was a good one"
the only difference is i got it on film.. i dont have some sort of porrly cared for sick animal. I think the only ishue here is me exploiting his agression... well.. i like it.. other wise i wouldent have gotten a nile.

MadAxeMan Mar 29, 2008 11:54 AM

Pretty much if a nile DOESN"T act like that I think something is wrong with it. While not quite as aggressive as niles, waters are basically similar in behavior when all is well. They are also capable of causing more damage with their bites. I understand doing a video to demonstrate such behavior and while stressful to the nile it is useful for the millions of nimrods out there that impulsively buy niles not knowing what they are getting into. If only one of them sees it and gets the point it's worth it. I will tell you that you should reconsider trying to let him run around the house. If you look up some of my old posts (I'm not repeating these moments of stupidity at this time.) you can get an example of what can happen allowing monitors to run loose in just a single room unsupervised. I can understand wanting to let your monitor stretch it's legs a bit but be careful it can cause problems you never saw coming.

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 12:38 PM

i compleatly agree with you.. the video was prompted because ive been talking with allot of kids that just got there first monitor... i cant tell you how many 13 and 14 year old kids message me about having a nile and it being to agressive for them. and blah blah blah.. people buy theise animals with little more thought then buying a bearded dragon. and thats just sad... one of my videos called "nile monitor rant" i spend the whole video trying to talk people out of getting them. theres this one kid that has his nile housed with a caimon.. he's kind of a lost cause.. if anyone else wants to try to reason with the kid feel free.

http://www.youtube.com/user/TaRazz13

i give the monitor another few months tops... the caimon will probrbaly be shortly after.

chuck911jeep Mar 29, 2008 11:55 AM

You are right, almost all nile keeper have been whip or bit and yes i'm one of them. What i dindn't find funny at all in this video is to see you exploiting is agression like you said, so your already knew it. It's only a question of respect for me, but it's your choice.
Take care!

brandonReise Mar 29, 2008 12:43 PM

and i actually agree with you.. compleatly.. what you missed was the actuall point of this video.. allot of kids saw vids of my nile being the somewhat tame awsome animal that he is. but then all the responces come in about how some kid wants one.. so many e-mails its rediculous. i wanted to show the agressive aspect of my loved pet that most people frankly arnt willing to deal with... if one person sees my video and says ya right ill get a acki.. then its mission acomplished.

jobi Mar 29, 2008 02:39 PM

understanding of what a nil monitor is!

they remember forever when you stress them, a tail whip means back off your invading my space, if you respect this space your nil will eventualy stop whipping and start to trust you.

yes I use to get the occasional whip, but I never get whip nowadays and forget about bitting as this will not happen.
iv lerned from decades of keeping monitors how to respect them, force handling and space invading is totaly out of question with any of my monitors.

thers nothing more rewarding then having a monitors thrust, especialy a nil, they have such an undeserving rep from this hobby, I just cant help posting whenever I see them displayed in such negative ways.

I love the way they comunicate with keepers, no other monitor specie is as easy to read, they have exelent bady language that only fools disregard, they dont have crazy feeding responce reponsible for so many accidental bites from most other monitor species, this alone makes then a much safer med-large specie to keep.

you can argue all you whant, and I do understand you being so defensive, but pleas try to understand that I am not judging you or your husbandry, I am only offering you better options that will lead you to a good relation with your captive, nils are the most enjoyable monitors if well treated.

swilson86 Mar 30, 2008 03:04 AM

hahaha, some niles can have extreme feeding responses though. the only *big* monitor i've ever gotten bitten by was a 6 foot nile monitor....and it was out of a feeding response, not aggression.

brandonReise Mar 30, 2008 03:06 AM

see now if that was the responce i got in the first place i wouldent have had to been so defensive.. your first sentice was telling me i didnt have the knollege to keep my animal... i usually dont have to force handle. i only do that picking him up when he's allwready upset.. usually he has no problom just letting me gently handle him.. i enjoy building trust with him..

anyway ill end this discution hopefully with a point of truce.. after all i enjoy this forum and would like to remain an active member here as long as my presence is welcome..

as you guys can tell im a little hard headed and can be a bit of a punk...

but hey at least im good at sparking up good coversation =]

Mike H. Mar 30, 2008 10:41 AM

I don't keep any monitors yet (although my Buddy Mike & I are working on acquiring a group of V. similis), but I do visit here often just to read and check out photos.

I'm happy to see this thread end on a good note, I've seen your videos and you seem to have your heart in the right place as far as your animal goes. Forums can be a tough place, people's hearts, personalities, and passions don't come through well when reading a typed out message...this makes it very easy for people to misunderstand one-another. I've been on both sides of that fence over the years on various forums; disagreements and quarrels are always going to happen, but we need to keep in mind that name calling and insults can do some long term damage....I spent 10+ years being ememies with someone resulting from forum disputes and when we FINALLY buried the hatchet we both realized what we had in common and what vaulable friends were were to each other.

Just something to keep in mind

Some guys see only what they want to see and make a judgement without getting the whole story. Very typical of people. Those that are truely educated will ask questions or have a firm understanding of what is happening.

I thought you were very insightful for showing this display and behavior. Hopefully someone will get some education from watching it.
