i don't know what to get

banjobert Mar 28, 2008 01:44 PM

(if i get any thing) i've been looking into getting a snake latley but i can't decide if i want a hognose, small pituophis, a rubber boa or an egg eating snake. does any one have advice or the pros and cons of getting one snake over the other?

Research the needs and difficulty of keeping the different species you are interested in. Some snakes have special requirements that are difficult for a novice keeper to provide and can lead to the animal's suffering, the keeper's frustration and the eventual loss of the animal. Of the species listed, I would say the rubber boa is probably best for a beginner, followed by the pit, then hognose and finally the egg-eater. Talk to people on the forums, call breeders and other hobbyists and spend some time at reptile shows before making your decision.
Good luck!

IMO, I'd go with the pit, they're easy keepers, and generally even tempered, Great snakes overall, although I would consider them 'medium' to 'large' sized, rather than 'small'. I'm not sure how much of a factor size is for your decision though.

actually not all pits are large in fact the ones i'm looking at are rather small. they are the santa cruz island dwarf gopher snake(about5ft) or the san diego gopher snake(3-4ft)

Which is why I did say ''medium'' to ''large''
