Is orchid food safe for darts?

AudioTaylor Aug 29, 2003 01:40 AM

I just got some 20-10-20 fertilizer for my newly mounted Paphiopedilum Spicerianum, 2 Phalaenopsis Hybrids, and a Chondrorhyncha Amazonica. Will this stuff be safe to spray with the frogs in the tank? Here's the ingredients list:

Plant nutrients derived from Ammonium Phosphate, Potassium Nitrate, Potassium Sulfate. Molybdenum from Ammonium Molybdate. Copper from Copper EDTA. Iron from Iron EDTA. Manganese from Manganese EDTA. Zinc from Zinc EDTA.

Its made by Grow More. Anybody know if its safe? Appreciate the help.

The ammonium fertilizers are not safe for frogs. Unfortunately, most orchids are pretty heavy feeders, so I'm not sure what the people who grow and successfully bloom orchids in their dart tanks use, if anything. I have a few orchids in the tanks, which survive, but have never bloomed. I don't use any fertilizers on them.

I have a Dendrobium orchid that is currently blooming in my terrarium without any fertilizer (other than the frog waste it might occasionally find). I have just recently begun to "inject" some very week hydroponic solution into the soil below the surface using a turkey baster with good results. However, I have a very coarse medium that is piled up about 6-8" thick in the areas where I am injecting. It has started to bring back some of the color to a few bleached plants with no ill effects to my tincs. I can't say that I would recommend that, but I was getting a bit desperate.

I should add that I just started injecting this past week, so results are very preliminary.
