I wouldn't use it at all. But you'll have to make your own decision.

Read the thread below titled "will this be enough light"

People think that the CFL's damage the reptiles eyes because they are too strong and therefore should be farther away. This is incorrect. A 10.0 is a 10.0. So why is there not the same problem with Zoo Meds standard flourescent tubes? The answer is that what is inside the bulb is different. The CFL are putting out the same UVB but more of other types of light that are damaging the animals cornia. The "move the bulb farther away" solution doesn't solve the underlying problem.

I don't think New2This means the compact florescent tubes, but the regular straight tubes..which are fine.

The straight florescent tubes should be no more than 6-8" from the basking spot...being a stronger UVB producing tube, dragons don't need to be as close to it for maximum benefit, compared to the older tubes.

26 watt is a CFL. Straight tubes are 10 watts per foot. So an 18" would be 15 watt, 24" - 20 watt, 36" - 30 watt, 48" - 40 watt, etc.

There's a discrepancy between the wattage and the length unless a CFL is 24" coiled up? Well, if it's a straight tube then the outside range is 20", I wouldn't let them get closer than 10 or 12".

My tubes are 8" from basking so i should be o.k! Thank you for the reply, and thanxs for all the other questions you have helped me with!
