Noteworthy Clutch

BrianSharp Mar 29, 2008 11:27 PM

Today a Texas Indigo female of mine laid a clutch of 14 good eggs and 8 slugs. That's a lot of genetic material, with the numbers being more in line with a large Yellow tail clutch than most Indigos.

The female Texan is ten years old, 6.5 feet in length and is from the Virgil Willis line of erebennus. This is her fourth clutch.

I took some photos, but can't seem to upload them to the photobucket account I've used before. But moving photos around is always an adventure for me. LOL

Congratulations! The fact that she layed a good clutch last year adds to the debate on need for captive female indigos to skip years for successful breeding. Are the good eggs normal size?

Steve,

The good eggs are normal size, but I did give her the year off last year. The Yellow tails produced for me last year. Generally speaking, I like to breed my Drys biannually, probably because I do not feed as heavily year round as many people do.

My high yellow Spilotes has produced for me the last two years, though.

Congratulations Brian, that was really a large clutch. It seems like with most Drys there is always a portion of the clutch that doesn't get fertilized. I wonder if this is an artifact from captivity? I would guess that in the wild multiple matings at different times might reduce this, but who knows. Sounds like you are going to have a great year!
Best wishes
Bob
