Blind Gecko

etaNcixelsyD Mar 30, 2008 07:04 AM

I posted this is the health subforum but since there are fewer visits there and i've gotten no responses, I'm reposting it here.

Hello all, its been quite some time since i've posted here, but i need your help.

My leopard gecko, who was born with a defect (one small eye) has possibly gone blind. She wanders around her tank with her head up, not focusing on anything and occasionally bumping into the walls. She no longer reacts when i reach my hand in near her, and doesn't chase crickets that run past.

This has been happening for the past two days, and other than these strange behaviors she looks completely healthy: no eye gunk, no nose gunk, her eyes are clear, etc. She hasnt eaten her crickets in the past two days and doesnt seem to even notice them scurrying past.

The change happened after the first night with her new shelter- a turned over terra cotta pot with a hole chipped out of the side (large enough for her to enter, by far). I washed the shelter very well and it was new anyway, so I dont think the change is related, but i thought i'd mention it anyway. Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks!

Also, I can take a video of her walking her cage tommorow, but i dont have time today and don't know if it'll be necessary.

It's a problem if she's not chasing her prey. Changes in the tank may stress them out and get them to stop feeding, but shouldn't last longer than a few days.

I recommend getting her to a vet. They should be able to tell you if she's indeed blind or just stressed, and what the next plan of action should be.

i have a blind gecko, she is doin fine only thing is i have to make sure everythin goes back in the same place and also i have her on meal worms, they are in a bowl n are always placed in the same places, after a few weeks she adjusted to this and can find her food wiv ease sometimes she wonders round when she does this i have a spray on calcuim which is also scented so i think the smell helps her to find the food i also add in can of crickets wiv the worms as they have a strong scent. she is very healthy and happy.
